Life Gets in the Way!!

Wow! I haven’t blogged since January 😦 But I have been super busy!

I’ve been reading, teaching and reading about teaching, presenting at conferences, and my new passion, getting fit. I won’t go on and on about the fitness thing, but basically I was tired of feeling tired, yucky, out of shape, and hating the way I felt and looked. So, on January 2nd I began a journey in which I will not turn back from! I started P90X (yes, from the infomercial) and stayed committed to it for the entire 90 days, not missing a day. I was so pleased with how I looked and felt, that I continued on with another Beachbody program, Turbo Fire and loved that one! Now I am half way through Insanity…and yes, it is INSANE! But I am in the best shape of my life and look and feel great. I also started training to run a 5K using the Couch to 5K program. I’m so glad I went on this journey…I will certainly need the stress reduction from it when I begin teaching SELF CONTAINED next year.

Yes, I said it. I will be teaching all subjects in 5th grade next year. I am excited and scared to death at the same time. Reading/Writing/Literacy are my things. I don’ know as much or feel as comfortable with math/science. I will have a major learning curve to deal with. I still have nightmares that school has started and I have nothing prepared. I hate those!!

I have been reading by Leslie Blauman and I have so many great ideas I want to try out! I want to be her!!! I also have a math book that I need to start reading to help me get my brain around what is needed for 5th grade math. My goal this week is to pop that bad boy open and get reading. I will certainly be doing a “close” reading of that book!! My head kind of hurts just thinking about it.

  1. Are you going to be teaching social studies, too? I’ll be teaching 5/6 American history for 1st time ever and a 30 minute block of 5th grade English.

I’m excited and scared, too!!!! 🙂

    • Yes, I will be teaching social studies and our curriculum is like from the explorers to the Revolutionary War to a country. I’m excited because I LOVE history. 🙂 I’ve also heard that there will be a new Common Core curriulum for Social Studies so I hope it doesn’t veer too far off of that…I’ve gathered so many books. 🙂 I also plan to incorporate daily geography (but not from a workbook) because I’ve noticed that students know next to nothing about it.

  2. My 5th grade curr is the same as yours, my 6th picks up where 5th leaves off and continues to present day. What are you going to do for daily geography? I will be teaching 4 classes each day at just over an hour for each. 🙂

    2 weeks and counting…..
